Pool Filter Sand

What kind of sand do I use in my pool filter?

Silica sand is the most commonly used filter sand. Quartz sand, white sand, and industrial sand are other names for it.

It is composed of two major elements: silica and oxygen. Silica sand, in particular, is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2). Quartz, a chemically inert and reasonably hard crystal, is the most prevalent type of SiO2. Silica sand is available at all swimming pool shops.

Diatomaceous earth, commonly known as DE sand, is an alternative sand that you can use. Diatomaceous earth coats the filter fabric when it is injected into the pool filtration system. The DE particles collect even the smallest suspended dirt particles as water runs through the filter grids. When cleaning is required, simply reverse the water flow.

How often should I change the pool filter sand?

This is highly dependent on the quality of sand used, but sand should be refilled every 3-5 years on average. This could be longer if the pool remains clear, or shorter if the filter runs continuously.

As the sand matures, the jagged edges wear away and become smooth. Weather, climatic fluctuations, pool usage, and sand quality should all be considered since they can reduce the sand’s life-span.

When will I know that the sand needs to be changed?

If the water in your pool starts to look foggy or hazy, it could be due to a slow-running sand filter. This can happen even if your sand filter appears to be in good working order.

This could be the first indication that your sand needs to be changed. Another sign to be on the lookout for is if your backwashing cycles have become shorter. Then you should inspect the sand filter to see if it is unclean or greasy. If the filter is unclean or greasy, don’t be surprised if it begins to resemble sandy lard.

How do I change the pool filter sand?

To begin, turn off your filter and pump. Drain the pool filter by removing the drain plug from the filter tank’s bottom and allowing the water to drain naturally. All hoses and pipes can now be removed.

The multiport valve must then be removed. You can now gently remove all of the sand and replace it with new sand, as well as all of the fittings
